Enjoy Your Conservatory All Year Round

Tuesday, November 13th, 2012

A conservatory is a wonderful addition to any home. They allow you to enjoy the beauty of your garden when the weather outside isn’t ideal. They can also provide you with extra space in your home at a fraction of the cost of a full extension. Bebington Glass and Glazing, specialists in conservatories, can provide your home with a wonderful place to dine, socialise or just relax.

While it’s possible to enjoy your conservatory to the full during the spring and summer months, the cold temperatures can make them unusable in the winter. Without sufficient ventilation, they can also become uncomfortably hot in the height of summer. But that doesn’t mean that your conservatory has to be reserved for certain times of the year. There are a number of simple steps you can take to make your conservatory a place you can enjoy all year round:

Insulation and Ventilation

During hot, sunny days, conservatories can become extremely hot, rendering them unusable. By having sufficient ventilation in your conservatory, you will be able to create pleasant atmosphere within it during the hot summer months. Ventilation is particularly important in south-facing conservatories because their position means they capture more sun. Equally, insulation is important to ensure that the atmosphere in your conservatory remains pleasant when the temperature drops.

Heating

You can use heating to make your conservatory more comfortable in the winter. However, it can be expensive to heat a conservatory. There are simpler, more cost effective steps you can take to make the room warmer during the winter months.

Blinds or Shutters

Blinds or shutters are an inexpensive addition you can make to your conservatory, but they can make a huge difference to the temperature of the room. In the summer, they can be used to provide ventilation. You can also use them to control how much sunlight is entering the room. Some blinds also have insulating properties, helping to keep the room warmer during the cold winter months.

Curtains

Curtains can be used alongside your binds or shutters to keep your conservatory at a pleasant temperature throughout the year. Thick curtains can be used in the winter to insulate your conservatory. They will help to stop heat escaping from the room, helping it stay warm and comfortable. In the summer, you can open your curtains to allow fresh air to enter the room, or close them to prevent sunlight from overheating the space.

Bi Folding Doors

Instead of the traditional patio or French doors, why not consider bi-folding doors for your new conservatory? In the summer, you can fold the doors back to make your conservatory an extension of your garden. This will also help to distribute fresh air evenly throughout the room, preventing the space from becoming overheated. You can also fold the doors back to control how much fresh air is entering the room. In the winter, you can use your bi-fold doors to seal your conservatory off completely from the outside. This will allow it to benefit from your home’s heating system.
